Fic: Getting Ready

Story #2 in Alternate World

Major Paul Davis flipped through the last of the personnel files that General O’Neill had brought back from his meeting with the President. He was looking forward to the changes that were being introduced but had a major concern.

“General, there is one thing that we need to figure out before we can start recruiting anyone.”

Once he had the general’s attention, Paul continued talking. “Several of these people have kids. We need to figure out how we want to handle family of those involved with the SGC and Homeworld.”

Jack leaned back in his chair as he considered what his assistant at Homeworld had said. He knew how important family was and understood that this kind of assignment had the potential to tear apart families. That was not something that he was comfortable with.

“We will need to get approval before moving forward with this but I think we need to account for people bringing their families with them to Texas. That means doctors on staff as well as teachers or childcare experts. And I think we need to allow for spouses and occasionally siblings to be read into the program.”

“Why have them read in? They could simply live in Texas at the base.”

Jack leaned backward and pulled a file off of his desk. He handed it to Paul. “You haven’t met her but this is Rodney McKay’s sister. She was read in when her knowledge started becoming relevant to the work that we are doing. But she was also put in danger due to her involvement with the program. I feel like family of those we want to bring into the program should be aware of what is really going on. They will have to pass the background checks just like anyone else. And we can put them to work in the program. Especially if they have experience in childcare, education or even medical environments. With us starting a brand new base, we are going to need a lot of help with areas that do not necessarily need specialized experience like the investigators will need.”

Paul considered this as he flipped through Jeannie McKay-Miller’s file. They were definitely going to need people for secretarial work and to fill in positions in a medical facility as well as the school or daycare that the general was hinting at.

“You had better get that approved before we start meeting with these people. I don’t want to say something for it to fall through.”

Jack nodded his agreement before picking up his phone. He normally didn’t like dealing with the politics that this type of suggestion would bring but felt it was too important to leave up to someone else.
